Elemental
TLDR: 5/10
I avoided this movie for a long time—as soon as it came out, everyone was saying how "woke” it was so it didn’t seem worth my time. Someone asked me to review it so, here we are!
I expected the entire movie to feel agenda-driven and woke but… it didn’t feel that way to me.
This movie speaks to the injustice of racism that still affects countless people today. I hate to say this, but often, conservatives act as if these things don’t exist because of the pendulum swing we’ve experienced in the last several years. We have to be careful not to allow the over-exaggerated, shame-filled, extreme side of this conversation doesn’t cause us not to talk about the very real side of this issue. The fire people in this movie continually say, “The world wasn’t made for us” and it’s true! The Elemental world is catered to the other elements and not to Fire. I think this movie tackles this issue beautifully.
The one ‘woke’ thing in this movie is that upon meeting the water guy’s family, he introduces his sister and her girlfriend. This expands upon the traditional view of sexuality and marriage. Decide for yourselves if this makes this movie a ‘no-go’ or not!
